Activity 4
Double Displacement Reactions

CuCl2 + Na2CO3 --->
2Na + 2Cl + CuCO3 + 2NH4OH  <---->  HCl + CuCO3 * Cu(OH)2 +  NH4
copper chloride + sodium carbonate --->
salt + copper carbonate + ammonium hydroxide <--->  hydrochloric acid + copper carbonate * copper hydroxide +  ammonia

Materials needed for each station:
  • 1 test tube rack
  • 4 pipets (droppers)
  • 1 medium test tube
  • 1 test tube stopper
  • 4 mL copper chloride solution
  • 2 mL sodium carbonate solution
  • 8 drops ammonium hydroxide
  • 12 drops hydrochloric acid

Procedures:
  1. Pipet 4 mL copper choride into a test tube.
  2. Using a clean pipet, add 2 mL of sodium carbonate solution to the tube of copper chloride solution.  Record your observations in your lab book.
  3. Using a clean pipet, add 4 drops of ammonium hydroxide to the mixture in the tube.  Record your observations in your lab book.
  4. Securely close the tube with a test tube stopper and gently shake the tube.  Record your observations in your lab book.
  5. Remove the stopper, and using a clean pipet, add 6 drops of hydrochloric acid to the tube.  Record your observations in your lab book.
  6. Add 4 more drops of ammonium hydroxide to the tube.  Record your observations in your lab book.
  7. Add 6 more drops of hydrochloric acid to the tube.  Record your observations in your lab book.
  8. Answer the Results Questions for Activity 4.
