Activity 3
Single Displacement Reactions

Mg + CuSO3 --->  MgSO3 + Cu
magnesium + copper sulfate ---> magnesium sulfate + copper

Materials needed for each station:
  • 1 magnesium ribbon (2 cm)
  • 1 test tube rack
  • 1 pipet (dropper)
  • 1 flame source
  • 1 ring stand or burner stand
  • 1 test tube clamp
  • 1 medium test tube
  • 1 test tube stopper
  • 2 mL copper sulfate solution

Procedures:
  1. Pipet 2 mL copper sulfate solution into a medium test tube.  Observe the color of the solution.  Record your observations into your lab book.
  2. Place a 2 cm strip of magnesium ribbon into the copper sulfate solution.  Securely close the tube with a rubber stopper and gently shake the test tube.
  3. Place the tube in the rack, remove the stopper, and, over the next few minutes, observe what is occuring.  Record your observations into your lab book.
  4. Continue to note changes and observe the reaction.  Answer the Results questions for Lab Activity 3.
